How I Started My Solo Travel Journey.

Updated: Nov 15, 2021

Hello and welcome to my personal blog. My name is Amoy, and I was born in Jamaica and raised on a small island on the cape known as Martha's Vineyard. Growing up, I did not have the luxury of traveling with my parents, and I was too sheltered as a child to even fathom the idea of traveling on my own.

Before becoming a solo traveler I was lost. I was not very cultured and my food palate was a repertoire of about 10 foods from the Caribbean. I wanted more for myself. I am not sure what clicked for me, but in 2017 I made the decision to spend my money less foolishly and to treat myself to a solo trip. Like most people who are eager to travel solo, I was terrified.

To get comfortable with the idea of doing things on my own, I went on solo dates, including the movies, and fine dining restaurants. Once I gained the courage to navigate life on my own, I went on a few domestic trips. If you are looking for places to travel alone I would highly suggest that you start local.

In late 2017, I planned my first solo trip outside of the United States to Toronto, Canada. By 2018, I was making a decent amount of money and I was craving adventure and a new scenery. I had made up my mind not to limit myself to summers on Capecod. Don't get me wrong, I have been very fortunate and going to the Cape and Islands is amazing, but I wanted to see the rest of the world. I took the Peter-pan bus from Boston to Montreal, Canada and then that summer I flew to London, United Kingdom; Paris, France; Munich, Germany; and Madrid, Spain.

In March of 2019, I went to the lovely island of Aruba, then to Lisbon and Sintra, Portugal; Barcelona, Spain and then hopped over to Amsterdam, Netherlands for a few weeks.
